Find Tubes Tied in Questions
tubes tied? I am due with my second child in March. We have decided this is the last child that we want. I am considering getting my tubes tied. I was just wanting some positive and negative feedback on this. A friend of mine said that all women that get this done have to have a hysterectomy within a few years. Since I am only 24 I really don't want to go thru all of that at such a young age. Also I was wondering if they can do this when you have the baby and if so will you be able to get up and move around as quickly as you would after having a baby anyway or would you have to stay in the bed longer? Please only serious answers! Thanks

babycs_girl replied: "my mom got this done, after she had her c-section. It's a lot easier for the guy to get snipped then you. With women it is a surgery. Do it only if you don't want any more kids."

RockerzRule replied: "You shouldn't do it because it's a surgery and your young you shouldn't do something you might regret try using condoms or the pill but it is your decision."

Saif replied: "great, if you know tell me as well."

cajungirl replied: "ive got my tubes tied with 22 after my second child. I cant tell you about the procedures in the USA, but that you have to go trough an hysterectomy is a tale. I am 34 now and had never any trouble with it. You still have your normal cycles and of course pms and all that crapp ;-( it is however easier for the man to get cut and in case you decide to have a baby again in 10 years or so (its a long time sweetheart and you are very young) it is also easier to reverse the guy and almost impossible to reverse the woman. Hope this helps"

lookin_for_my_thong_panties replied: "well I can say that I have had my tubes tied. After our fourth we decided it was best for our family. The only strain is that I have severe cramping and longer periods....I haven't heard of the hysterectomy part....sounds goofy to me...your 24? I think the doctor that delivers your next child may ask you if your 100% sure you want to do this......good luck:) my surgery was done the very next day and it was painful and I was sore for a few days after...I had all of my children naturally so I don't know what a c section feels like, but if you have a c section, I think they perform the tubal ligation at the moment after they take the baby out...."

auntb93 replied: "Since you are only 24, you should think twice about having your tubes tied. There is lots of fertile time left in your life, and you could end up regretting the decision. Why not use a reliable birth control method and leave your options open? My mother had her tubes tied at the same time she had me by Cesarean section. Many years later, she admitted that one of the reasons she did not leave my abusive father was that she felt bad for never having given him a son, but only two daughters, and because "it wouldn't be fair to the next guy" because she was then sterile. I had my tubes tied when I was 30, never having had a child. Then I later regretted it when I fell in love with a man who would have made a good father. I believe it's possible he committed suicide last year in part because he despaired of ever having a son (or daughter) to carry on. Since you already have two children, your situation is more like mother's than mine. But note that we both regretted it."

mle32005 replied: "I too was considering having my tubes ties after This baby. ( It is my 4th baby) I spoke with my doctor about it and she told me that because I was so young (25) she would advise my hubby getting snipped. I asked why and she told me, in her experience, that when a women is younger than 28 the chances of still getting pregnant are pretty high due to the high fertility of a young women. She also said she wont do it in the hospital. You have to get it done at your 6 week check up. That means you heal from having your baby then have to heal all over again. My mom had her tubes tied and still hasn't had a hysterectomy. And that was 25 years ago. I would advise that you look into all types of sterilization if that is what you are sure you want to do. It is much easier for the man to get snipped. It is an outpatient thing. For a women it is a major surgery. Besides, like I tell my hubby, I went through all of these pregnancies for you, this is the least you can do. Good luck and I hope you find what will work best for you!"

shorty replied: "I asked the same thing because of my age. I am due in Jan. with my first child but I am 35. I am still not sure if I should do it or not. I am thinking I probably won't because you just never know how you will feel in a couple of years."

btceeseymore replied: "There are so many women that get this done and then regret it. Remember your baby grows up fast and then down the road you can't take back what you have done. You are only 24. So think about this. What happens it you husband would pass away in 5 yrs and you then meet a really awesome guy and he wants children of his own too. OR 5-10 yrs down the road you and your husband want to experience having another baby. Lots of women say well I am done, I don't ever want to do this again, I don't want more than 2 children, and guess what they all wanted more later. This is the same for my mom. She got hers done after two children and remarried, then he wanted a child because he never had one. Lucky the reversal worked, that's not always the case. She then went through a hysterectomy because of early menopause. Another thing to think about is what if something would happen to one of your children. Then you couldn't have another to help with grieving. I hope I am helping by telling you somethings that could happen and do happen to people. It is all apart of are lives. Well good luck on the birth of your second child. Hope you make a decision that you are happy with for the rest of your life."

Winnie08_98 replied: "I've never heard of anyone needing a hyterectomy after getting their tubes tied. I just had a baby in October and got my tubes tied at the same time but I had a c-section so I didn't have to have any additional procedures. You are still young and you only have two children, and because this is an irreversable decision I would wait awhile and use other ways of protection. Many doctors won't even do it unless you are at a certain age or have had many children. Good Luck!"

Sari replied: "Have you heard of an IUD? Depending on what kind you get it is good for up to 10 years. I am 24 also and I thought I was done to. I was so young when I had my last one they recommended the IUD. I am glad they did because we are trying for another baby right now."

gothammom replied: "At your age I wouldn't do something so permanent. I would recommend an IUD. You never know what will happen in the future. You could get divorced, fall in love again, and want another child later in life. I wouldn't do anything you may regret."

tinseltown replied: "I had my tubes tied at age 23 after my 3rd child, I was asked all the ?'s about why I wanted it done, and was given the well you are really young lecture, you may change your mind....My dr even posed the what happens if you lose your current children in an accident, would you want more--I have to tell you that ? threw me--but honestly I wouldn't want to have a child to "replace" another child. I am 31 now, have not had to have a hysterectomy. I did have to wait until my 6 week check up to have the procedure done (my last child was delivered in a Catholic hospital and they are against sterilizations unless your life hangs in the balance)--I had a lot of pain, and am grateful to whoever made Vicodin recovering from my tubal was worse than anything I ever went through. I had all three of my kids natural, sp healing after their deliveries was easy compared to what I hear in regards to c-section deliveries. I will tell you about 2yrs ago, I started to have thoughts on having a 4th child but, all it took was me babysitting my new nephew (a newborn) to cure me of that notion--because at the time my youngest was 6 and I was done with midnight feedings, diapers, formula, sore breasts, no sleep and taking my 2month old nephew for the night reminded me of one of the bigger reasons that I didn't want anymore kids.--Hope this helps"

aunt reesy replied: "I had a hysterecctomy years ago because of pcod disease. It was wonderful for me because pcod is so painful I would throw up and be totally out of it with my monthly.Don't be afraid of the pain of it the laser surgery is so painless I didn't feel enough pain to let my insides heal. So please take it easy the time the Dr. says.As to your age the Dr. should help you make that choice. My tubal was done in the hospital after my 2nd child but I was 29 and I had a boy and a girl so my Dr. decided it was the right choice for me.However taking a hormone pill every day for the rest of your life is not my choice. Good luck with your choice. The pain free time monthly was great but I do understand their are risk. It was the right choice for me. I think the Dr. wants to wait until you are a certain age and you have both a boy and a girl. I hope I helped. It has been wonderderful without the monthly visitor however the risk are a trade off. The choice should be between you and your Dr.As for staying in the bed longer, I didn't and the Dr. said right after having a child the surgery was easier because your insides are in a bettter spot to get to, but it.s certainly not the only thing to consider. Let your Dr. decide about the risk. They had me up walking before leaving the hospital but no heavy lifting for a few weeks. The baby is not to heavy so I was able to take care of my newborn.I hope I have helped answer your question even though you are 5 years younger than I was. Good luck this is a tough decision. aunt reesy"

doyle replied: "I am 32 years old and had my tubes tied after the birth of my second child. I only ever wanted two children and I have one girl and one boy, what more could I ask for. I never thought that I would want another child. My doctor made me wait after having my son to make sure it is what I wanted. I believe he told me that you could have it done during birth if you have a c section. Ask your dr. that. Now I am divorced and I am dating a wonderful man who has no children and would like to. I also would love to have a child with him. Now the problem of trying to have a child. I have only spoken with my dr. a little regarding this but I was told that it can be reversed but the chances of getting pregnant are slim and if I did the chances of having a live child is only around 10%. They did say I could get pregnant just not the normal way. It has been almost two years since I had my tubes tied and I have not had any problems. My advice to you is not to do it. I really wish I did not do it. You never know what the future holds for you and you do not want to limit your options. You are still young and you may want more kids down the road, and if that happens you will be in the same boat I am in. Hope this helps."

What happens when you get your tubes tied? My doctor is planning on tieing my tubes after I have my second son Jan 2nd. He said, If I didn't get my tubes tied that my uterus would rupture and kill the baby and I next time I try and get pregnant. So I thought it best for my sons and I if I do that. What happens in this process and will anything change after that? I am only 22 I feel so young to have something done like this, but I don't wanna risk dieing and not seeing my 2 boys grow up.

Daft One replied: "You don't have to get your tubes tied to prevent preganancy. You could just use some birth conrtol such as condoms, sponges, IUD, pills, shots, patches, foams, vaginal inserts, etc, etc. There are TONS of birth control out there, and you should not be FORCED to have your tubes tied. Your doctor sounds like a jackass. A tubal ligation is a painful proceedure and it hurts. Also it could make your periods hurt worse. Also it cuts through nerves and you could lose some sensation in your lower abdoman, and sex might not feel as wonderful. Think about it before you go through the SURGERY. Think about other forms of birth control. Also you could ask your husband to get a vasectomy. It's easier for a man to get a vasectomy than it is for a woman to get her tubes tied."

YongBoiNiedsHelp replied: "Thats awsome your haveing a baby but at your age getting you tubes tided is a big deal cause you wont be able to have anymore babies. It the equvalent of a vecectimy for a man"

buttercookies replied: "no doubt it hurts, but it's the surest way of preventing another pregnancy. i don't know what side effects it will have though. congrats on your pregnancy! may you have a lovely baby boy (:"

raadsgirl replied: "I personally would get more opinions ( more than two) this is hard and imagine if your doctor got it wrong and it couldn't be reversed!?! I am also 22 and a mother of two beautiful boys and i would be devastated if a Dr told me this and i sure as hell would make sure they were right!! So just wait until you are healed and get a second opinion. All the best with your newborn and delivery in a few days and hope you have wonderful new year with your family."

yrez replied: "get second opinion"

kathleen_martin8 replied: "In laparoscopic sterilization, the patients abdomen is inflated with gas (carbon dioxide), which helps the surgeon locate the fallopian tubes. A small incision is made below the navel, and a laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen. Instruments are inserted into the same incision or a separate incision and the tubes are either cut and tied, cauterized (use of heat to form an electric current to fuse the tubes) or closed with plastic clips or rings. In some cases, a small piece of each tube is removed. The procedure is often performed on an outpatient basis. Also there is a new procedure called The Essure procedure it is the most recent sterilization technique to receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In this procedure, a catheter is used to introduce a soft, flexible metallic microinsert through the vagina and into each fallopian tube. Within three months, scar tissue forms around the microinsert and blocks off the fallopian tube. The entire procedure can be completed within 35 minutes and does not require any incisions. I hope all gos well. Be happy that you have two wonderful boys to love. You shouldn't see changes from having this done. You just won't be able to get pregnant. Have a good New Year!"

sd_mcbride replied: "First, if this isn't what you want, get a second opinion! Make sure it's a completely different doctor too. You don't want your second opinon to come form a doctor what works closely with yours. If all else fails see someone in another town! I'm 24, and I had my tubes tied by choice last year, but I have four children. My doctor was a bit reluctant, but did it for me because of the number of children I have. I weighed my decision very carefully and I'm still happy with it. I had to have a c-section, because I was having twins, and the presenting twin was breech. It was all done at the same time. If you don't have a c-section they're more than likely preform a laparoscopy. It's microscopic surgery, so they won't be cutting you open. If you're interested on reading up on the procedure, I've listed a couple links below. As for side effects, I haven't really witnessed any. My periods are a bit heavier, but nothing too bad. I can't bare witness to any excess pain. My first two were born naturally, and I believe my pain this past time was caused from the c-section. My mother had her's done, after a natural birth, and it didn't hurt her too bad. She was sore for a day or two afterwards, but nothing major. In the end, follow your heart. There's still a slim chance that you could get pregnant after a tubal ligation. 1 in 600 as it was explained to me. If you're not okay with the idea of a tubal ligation, ask about other forms of birthcontrol. You might consider Depo Provera, something you only have to worry about 4 times a year. Maybe an IUD? They provide protection for 5 to 10 years. You never know what science will come up with in a couple years. If you're not ready to be DONE done, then don't. You're still young, your doctor shouldn't make you do something so permenant, if it's not what you want. Point blank, do NOT do it, if it's not want you want. There are too many other ways to prevent pregnancy. Best of Luck!"

short _one replied: "MY ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTIONS IS.... DO WHAT TO FEEL IS BEST FOR YOU. NO DOCTOR CAN REALLY TELL YOU WHAT DECISIONS TO MAKE WITH YOUR BODY. LIKE YOU SAID YOU ARE ONLY 22. UNLESS YOU HAVE HAD VERY DIFFICULT PREGNANCIES, DON'T WORRY ABOUT MAKING SUCH A BIG DECISION LIKE THAT AT THIS PRESENT MOMENT. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE MAY HOLD FOR YOU."

What is the difference between getting your tubes tied and tubal ligation? Is there a difference? Is there such thing as getting your tubes "burned" what would that be called? What happend was, my friend signed a paper for a tubal ligation and to her understanding that meant to tie her tubes, well she went to the doctor today and they told her that they "burned" them what does this mean? She wanted them tied not burned, and that is what she signed for right? Can she get the in trouble for this? Can they burn your tubes if they tell you they are going to tie them? Or is that the same thing? I dont mean does it do the same thing, I mean is it the same procedure ?

Crystal replied: "Tubal ligation (informally known as getting one's "tubes tied") is a permanent form of female sterilization, in which the fallopian tubes are severed and sealed or "pinched shut", in order to prevent fertilization. They are the same."

versantly replied: "none- take the word of the trained professional."

How long after having your tubes tied did you wait to have sex? Also, has anyone gotten pregnant after having your tubes tied?

cheriberi5671 replied: "I waited about 4 weeks, since I had mine tied the day after the birth of my last child 15 months ago. I do not know anyone personally who has gotten pregnant after this procedure. I do know that any pregnancy after a tubal ligation more often than not results in an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy."

Stacy Z replied: "I googled this ? and found this. I had mine done 1 month ago. We waited 5 days. But now I have breast soreness and am getting worried because I should have had my period yesteday. My doc said to wait 1 week. So now I am a bit nervous--what if I am pregnant? Wow."

What happens if you got your tubes tied and you still take birth control? My friends mom has her tubes tied and still takes birth control what will happen to her mom if she keeps taking it?

Mike replied: "Well you get your periods less, but you get the same side affects, other then that nothing."

What are the good and bad things about getting tubes tied? I have heard a lot of bad thing about getting tubes tied. I'm looking for some information because I want to get mine tied. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.

Martha S replied: "The good is no more birthcontrol the bad is that it can make your cycle irregular and a tad more uncomfortable. I had mine tied after my son was born and I never regretted it."

Janais replied: "It's not bad. But ask a professional first. I know a lot of women who got their tubes tied and it was all just fine so...Yeah.."

Jill replied: "I had mine done and it's all good for me! It's been 18 years with no complaints. :) The only thing you need to be sure of is that you don't want any more pregnancies, because it's not always successfully reversed."

juju replied: "Obviously, the bad thing is having to undergo surgery under anesthesia. I recommend that your husband/partner have a vasectomy as this is much less invasive and only fair if you have already endured pregnancy/labor/delivery. But it is a good thing. I had my tubes tied in 1992 and had no problem with the procedure. Plus, the risk of pregnancy is almost 0%! Although, I remember that right before I had mine tied, there was an article in the paper about a woman who had gotten pregnant with her tubes tied and her partner also had a vasectomy! So, nothing is 100%. Good luck!"

rachelemburke replied: "There is a form of birth control, called Mirena, that is as effective as having your tubes tied, has the lowest risk of side effects. There is no human error factor like with other birth controls, or worrying about taking a pill all the time or whatever. It also lasts for 5 years, then you can get a new one. you can also get it removed whenever you want, if you decide you want another child. talk to your doctor about it. it would be a less drastic, yet equally effective choice for you"

mommato4boys replied: "Personally I love having my tubes tied. My periods are heavier and I usually have more cramping but I love the freedom of not remembering other bc."

ninkmann2000 replied: "GOOD: No more babies!!! BAD: No more babies!!! That's pretty much it. You're still going to have a period every month, that doesn't change to much after you have your tubes tied. Just make sure it's the right time for you, and that you may not change your mind later. While some of the procedures can be reversed it's very costly to do so. Most insurances will pay to have it done, but not the other way around."

montanagal28 replied: "For me there was no good.. and the bad... no babies (if you want more later on) I had mine tied 4 years ago and am CURRENTLY 5 weeks pregnant and have had 2 miscarriages in the last year. So, if you get them tied, make sure its done properly and MAKE SURE you dont want to have kids again. I REGRET getting mine done, but maybe this pregnancy will be a full term :) Good Luck on what you decide :)"

slickidiot4 replied: "I had my tubes tied 18 moths ago and I have not had any problems with it. My cycle is normal every 28 days, and i don't have to worry about getting pregant any more."

lins replied: "see, natural alternative med/. control yourself...is best...than touching my body..."

Regina R replied: "Having your tubes tied is a very important decision. Reversal is expensive and not always successful. Having you tubes tied is major surgery. You are put to sleep and when you wake up, it been done. That was the part I didn't like, being put to sleep. Once you have the surgery, you will stay a few days in the hospital for observation. Your stomach will hurt, and you will feel the need to cough. You will have to hold a pillow over your stomach and push down to cough. Once you go home, you will need to take it very easy for a few weeks, so you won't risk tearing the sutures open. Try to have someone home to help you and the baby (if you just had one). Once you are healed up, you will have no more problems! For the first year, you will need to use a back-up method of birth control. Even after that, you still have the rare chance of becoming pregnant. But very rare. I have had no problems after tying my tubes. And, my husband & I enjoy ourselves more with the idea of not having more children. Just be sure this is what you want, it's virtually permentant."

Brandy S replied: "Here are all the good things I experienced getting mine tied: no more birth control, no more worrying about getting pregnant, had a quick recovery time, also found out i had a medical problem called endometriosis that should have been diagnosed long before it was-that was good because I got it treated and now dont have to worry anymore. bad things: might regret it later (I still dont regret mine being done) there is a very very slim chance of pregnancy which could be an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy."

What are good exercises for someone that has had their tubes tied? I had my tubes tied eight years ago. When they tied them, they went in right under my belly button, because they cut the muscle, I am now unable to lose fat or tone my midsection. What are good exercises to get a flat belly?

pippystix replied: "Would it be possible for your use those stimulation pads? I'm not sure what they're called, but they're like a tens machine. They're pads you stick on your tummy which are connected to a small machine and when turned on they make your muscles contract and release, without you having to do any of the work."

How long will my tubes stay tied after a tubal? It has been 5 years since I had my tubes tied. I want another baby without having to go through a reverse tubal. I know it is a certain amount of time the tubes stay tied before they come loose.

Vicky replied: "This is not supposed to happen ... they're supposed to stay that way!"

Tina replied: "Having your tubes tied is supposed to be permanent - especially if they were cut and burned. . . but there have been stats showing that approximately 18% of women with their tubes tied will potentially experience a pregnancy within 10 years depending on health and age. . .unfortunately, at least a third of time it will be a non-viable ectopic pregnancy in the tubes. If you want to have another child, please see your doctor and go over your options for having a reversal or perhaps explore IVF. "

2sexy4u replied: "I think forever!!!!! you are going to need to get a reverse tubal"

Dolyn replied: "About 1 in 400 tubals fail eventually, and they are usually after 4 years (giving the tubes time to heal and create a small opening)... but that's NOT supposed to happen. Tubals are premanent. that's the point. If you are waiting around, hoping to be that 1 in 400, your in trouble! Honestly, you should have been told this by your doctor. Who gets a tubal liagtion and doesn't know it's permanent?"

Valerie S replied: "well, they don't actually "tie" them, they usually cut them & burn the ends-so there's nothing to "come loose"-it's not a knot. If you want to get pregnant again you will need to go get a tubal reversal, otherwise you could be waiting a VERY long time for nothing."

Yolonda T replied: "I think a tubal is meant to be permanent. It is very rare that they come "unloose". There is always IVF treatments if you would like to concieve another child. Goodl ucki!"

What are the odds of getting pregnant after having your tubes tied and burned? About 6 1/2 years ago I had my tubes tied and burned. They told me that they were positive about one tube but the other they were not sure due to the fact that I had scar tissue and they weren't sure if they got the other one. Do you know if it will be possible to conceive again cause it has been 6 years and I have unprotected sex with my husband all the time.

Irene replied: "probably not."

KATEEEE. replied: "I'm sorry but.. did you say burned?! D: Holy shit. Ow."

sexyslim replied: "There is always a possibility, but it's very, very small."

Em replied: "zero to one"

Chavon replied: "its pretty much a wrap"

What are the real odds of getting pregnant with your tubes tied? What can cause you to become pregnant, when tied (I know the birds and bees?) Is it safe? How long does it take for this to happen? Does it stop working after a few years, like it breaks or something? How long is it really good for? Have you or someone you know gotten pregnant with tied tubes? If so what was the story? Bent together and tied of with microscopic rubber band.

Scrabble Girl replied: "I did get mine tied, and so far nothing, but it's only been 7 months. My sister in law on the other hand, got pregnant and had a baby 2 years after having hers tied. Unfortunately, the baby didn't make it. The doctors told me that the chance of getting pregnant after a tubal is slim to none."

Wanda replied: "In the old days, the doctor would bend the tube over (think crimping a fire hose) and then they could use a clip to keep anything from flowing through it. Sometimes the clips would come off and the flow restored. Now doctors typically cut through the tube with a laser so they are fused shut at the end. Thus, making it impossible for a pregnancy to occur. Depending on the way the doctor did the surgery will impact the result."
