Questions and Answers
If I turn in my license plates to NY DMV now, will they start counting off my suspension immediately? I paid my insurance late, so there was a lapse of 10 days after I reinstated it. NY DMV is suspending my registration and plates for 10 days, and they want my plates and registration immediately, but the letter I received says the suspension is effective two weeks from now. If I turn my plates in now, do they start counting my suspension time immediately?

Bill T replied: "It starts on the day the suspension is effective. They give you that long between now and the effective date to submit your plates to get things in order."

Does the NY DMV automatically send you a new senior license? I just turned 18 today and now my license becomes a Senior license from a Juniors license. Does the NY DMV automatically send you a new license or do you have to go to an office to request it?

UCANTCME replied: "You will need to go in-person to get this changed out correctly....."

Does NY DMV automatically send me a D license when I turn 18 if I already have a DJ? I took the road test in NYC when I was 17, and passed. I got my DJ license. And now that I've turned 18 on September 25th (almost 2 weeks ago) will the DMV automatically send me a Class D license in the mail? I know that on my driver record I'm listed as a senior class D driver starting the day of my birthday. I Just want a license that actually says I'm a D driver and not a junior. Thanks.

Crispy replied: "Yes, NYS will send you a Class D license on your 18th birthday... but it takes about two weeks to process. You can check this site for the status:"

Can i go to NY state DMV before im 17 to give them my completion form so I can get a class D licence? I live in NY and i passes my road test before i completed drivers ed. My drivers ed instructer told me that i should go before my 17th birthday so they send it to me by my birthday. However on the NY state DMV website it says not to go before you turn 17. Looking for someone who has experiance with this situation before....thanx

oklatom replied: "If you have a Class DJ junior license, and you complete a high school or college driver education course, you can change your Class DJ junior license to a Class D senior license when you are 17 years old. Not before. Seems clear enough to me. The rest of it: To change the class of your driver license, you must have a driver education certificate (MV-285) issued from a DMV-approved driver education program. You cannot use another certificate. If you do not have an MV-285, the DMV automatically changes your driver license from Class DJ to Class D on your 18th birthday. The DMV automatically mails you a new driver license that indicates "Class D". You will not get this document faster if you visit a DMV office. On your 18th birthday, your driver record indicates that you are a Class D driver. There is no need to wait until you have your new Class D driver license before you drive as a senior driver. You can drive as a senior driver on your 18th birthday. Give your driver education certificate (MV-285) to the DMV examiner after your road test. The DMV will update your driver record and will automatically issue a Class D photo driver license on your 17th birthday. You will receive the new driver license in the mail. There is no fee when you change the class of your driver license by this method. Your driver license record will show that you are a Class D driver. You do not need to have your Class D document to drive as a senior license driver. You can drive on your 17th birthday. Note: If your 17th birthday occurs on a weekend or a state holiday, your record is updated and your Class D driver license is issued on the next business day."

jillolli replied: "You do have to wait till your actually 17. They will give you a temporary while you wait for your license so its really the same. You might want to ask your drivers ed instructor if he knows some loop pole but otherwise, going on your birthday (or after) is what you have to do."

Do The NY DMV's accept the letter the SSA gives you when you get a replacement card? I'm going to take a Asbestos handling class on Monday and they require A Id...So I am going to the DMV but I lost my Social Security Card. Will they Accept the letter that the DMV gives you when you go too the SS office? Or is there a Way I can Get A Card On The Spot At the office?

what is the ny dmv law that makes insurance co. cover sudden depreciation on a new hit motorcycle? Our new 08 Harley was hit by a left turn driver. Other driver was ticketed and admitted sole fault. Insurance company will cover damages but our concern is that we lost resale value even though it will completely repaired. It will always be a bike that has been in an accident. We bought the bike brand new from a dealer 3 months ago. Thanks for any help.

dmb91100 replied: "look into a diminished value claim, you may get some cash in your pocket if you can get one of those claims. However they are only in certain states, im not sure about NY, and they are ussaly only if there is frame damage on cars, not sure about bikes. Anyways ask the insurance company for a diminished value claim"

Its says for NY DMV that after getting your permit you must wait 6 months to apply for your license. True? Does this also prevent you to sign up for drivers ed? If you take driver-ed do you have to wait the six months?

Topsy Kretts replied: "Yes, anyone age 16 or older has to wait the mandatory 6 months after obtaining a permit before they can get thier license. For first time drivers not transferring thier license from another state. Drivers ed replaces the 5 hour course you need to complete as a requirement. Also drivers ed allows you to pretty much automatically pass the written exam. (you don't have to take it if your instructor gives you a certificate)"

i lost my license plate what does the ny dmv do about that? my dmv is closed now, would i get a whole new set of plates that i had for years? or do i get the single replaced?, any laws about driving and getting pull'd over with only one plat on the vehicle?

Nap replied: "The Law is specific. A plate missing and your driving with only one, Then there could be a ticket in your future. Now, What county you in? Not knowing I'm going to give you a sort of generic version interspersed with NY City law. If your plate is lost or stolen the first thing you have to do Is go to your local PD and file a report. In NY City you will be given a form #78B. On this form is places for (1 or 2 plates-was your plate(s)stolen or missing? The important thing is that you mostly think they where stolen because the screw was missing. Saying that first, there is NO WAY your going to get 1 plate replaced nor get your old number back. Having said that, you now bring your registration and the 78B form that says your front/rear license plate was stolen. You also go there with the remaining plate. You now fill out a new MV82 form available there at the DMV. They will give you a new set. When you give them the remaining plate. Now the reason I kept on the "Stolen" Item thing is because in New York State we have a law that protects the victim of crimes. It's called surprisingly enough the "Crimes Against Persons Law" Make sure you quote this at the DMV because there is no fee charged in NY for crime victims. All this is relatively painless. Good luck and don't forget the 78B form"

entidtil replied: "They will issue a new set of plates after you pay for them. You must have 2 plates displayed or they can arrest you"

my friend bought a 2005 sentra that was deemed a salvage vehicle. the ny dmv wants to inspect the car? the fee is $150. they said he cant get the title unless he gets the inspection done. what kind of inspection is it n should he do it?

Burberry replied: "If he can return the car, do that. Otherwise you'd have to go through with the inspection. First of all, take the car to an auto shop that knows what they're doing and find out if the car can pass inspection in it's current state. If it cannot, then how much would it cost? Then you can decide from there whether or not it is worth it."

sensible_man replied: "The inspection will be for road worthiness and if it is a stolen vehicle. On top of the inspection costs, he will need to prove all violations were repaired before he will get a title."

Does anyone know some of the questions n THE DMV NY permit written test -license? i know that you must correctly answer at least 14 of the 20 questions asked. but does anyone remenber some of those questions? :/

DASS replied: "email me i have it with the correct answer . in pda format all 100 questions . any 20 they will ask u"

notapacrat replied: "Hey DASS, I hope if you help them cheat on the test that someday you two will meet on the road!! And for the test taker. Don't cheat. I believe....if you go to the DMV they will give you this really thorough, in depth cheat sheet all bound together (for your convenience)!!"

flea replied: "Go to Click on New York on the map On the left in the yellow box named Featured Resources Click on Practice Tests In the center column just more that 1 screen down Click on the hot link MANUAL With QUIZZES Many of the questions on these quizzes are taken directly from the tests."

Marcus C replied: "Hello, We often take for granted what a convenience our cars are. I was paying a low price for my insurance, but at renewal time, my insurer tried to increase my rates. My friend sent me a link to this site: They have a free search to compare auto rates from the major insurers. It saved me a lot of money! Best of Luck"
